A lifetime is not a long time and although we raise ourselves to hysterical levels regularly over things that, in retrospect, we decide are pretty trivial, as recruiters we are not being paid to think very often. So all the wonderful lessons I learn from meditation and conscious living are completely irrelevant to my clients. My responsibility is to deliver the right person to them.
When I start to think too much or worry too much, I put up a sign much like this one that reminds me where I need to put my energy.
You see, the fact is that the media, whether it is news media, print media, mass media, cable media, radio or bloggers are selling hysteria to me. They are making money by scaring me or fascinating me with the bizarre nature of life.
But like that odd philosopher, Bill Murray, said in the movie, Meatballs, when he drove a group of goofy campers into a frenzy with a repetitive chant before they went to compete with the other camp of athletes, "It just doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter."
Repeating it what seemed like more than 50 times, he concluded by saying, "It just doesn't matter because our girls are going to still go out with their guys."
In that oddball way, he says what we as search professionals need to remember, "It just doesn't matter if Michael Jackson does something weird, or OJ is arrested or if Senator Obama or Senator McCain are elected President if we spend time being distracted from what our real purpose is--to help businesses throughout the world solve their human capital needs by identifying, recruiting, assessing, and helping get hired and on-boarded talent that they need.
